REPORT ON SPECIFIC LEARNING DISORDER
The first year post graduate students of M.sc Counselling psychology attended an three days workshop called “Specific Learning Disorder” at NIRAIVAGAM, kilpauk, Chennai.
The program that facilities participative learning commenced on 22/01/2025 and concluded on 24/01/2025 the resources persons are
The first day (22/01/2025) Session one – started with some activity called ice break which we introduce with each other and started the class, the topic was specific learning disorder introduction, myths about SLD, roll of IQ in SLD common learning difficulties(dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia), remedial for SLD and why its happening after break we learned about what is Dyslexia, dyscalculia reason begin Dyslexia, dyscalculia , remedial for dyslexia, dyscalculia(example magic multiplication using fingers)
Session 2 has started with the topic called memory. From this afternoon session we learned about memory and how its related to SLD and types of memory (short term memory, long term memory, active memory) and how we memorize the objects, information and etc.. through our five senses such as visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, olfactory(rare). And also what is distractibility, discrimination attention, focus and remedial for avoid confusion and increase memory. Finally we concluded the session with recalling all the information which is what we learned from session one and session two.
The second day (23/01/2025) session 3 has started with the topic called dysgraphia from this session we discussed and learned about attention, distraction types source assessment process, according to DSM -V what is SLD and types of tools (specific to NIMAANS battery) and also we learned dyspraxia.
Session 4 has started with the topic called strategies to overcome spelling and reading difficulties. from this afternoon se session we learned strategies to overcome spelling and reading difficulties, spelling rules, reading and reading difficulties remedial ideas benefits of reading, kinds of reading, reading technique phonemic awareness. Finally we concluded the session with some activities which related to reading and spelling.
The third day (24/01/2025) session 5 has started with the topic called study skills how to improve study skills and some technique such as different kinds of map (mind map, web map, venn diagram, MNEMONIC, linear map, fish bone diagram, burger diagram) and each diagram was explained through activities by each group members.
Session 6 has started with the topic called empowering children with SLD. from this session we learned how to empower children with SLD and what kind of challenges they are facing in the society types of challenges reinforcement, such as distraction and attraction. Finally we conclude session which is related to reinforcement.
On the whole, the programme gave the students an enjoyable and eager to enriching experience.it was a very good opportunity for the participant to know about specific learning disorder and also the sessions breaks the myths in specific learning disorder. then, it helps the future counsellors, teachers, parents to know actually what is specific learning disorder and how to diagnose and how to differenciate from slow leaner to children with specific learning disorder and also its helps to remedials. Because these may be become a aware of SLD and help and understand the children with specific learning disorder (SLD).
