INDUSTRIAL VISIT (2024-2025)

We went to the Industrial Visit at Appa Mental Health Facility in Tiruvannamalai on 20th August 2024. The session was started at 10:30 AM and ended at 1:00 PM. Mr. Ashok Kumar V he is Psychologist at Appa Mental Health Facility in Tiruvannamalai, he said that “APPA MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY” was started on 10th October 2013 as a 15 bedded Psychiatric nursing home in the town of Tiruvannamalai with vision to develop further in to a holistic mental health care delivery including De-addiction, Rehabilitation, Daycare, Half way home for the chronic mentally ill and special school for the differently abled children in the long run. He asked us that “What kind of job opportunities having on the Counseling Psychology studying students ” and he told us “ Where we going to use and apply on the psychological techniques & skills ”, he taught us that “Three patterns of Alcoholic patient [People who has come under the  Social pattern; they are giving only counseling, People who has come under the Harmful pattern; they have issues in the physical, psychological, community, relationship and workplace; they are giving counseling + Medicine (Outpatient treatment) & People who has come under the Deep level of pattern; they have on both the Physical issues such as headache, shaking, vomit, nausea, and Psychological issues such as hallucinations, delusions, difficulties to concentrating, thinking, and making decision; they are giving only medications (Inpatient treatment)], Types of Alcohol addiction [Unable to control, Block-out (Memory loss) when they are Drinking too much, Forgetting on their environment (it means that without knowing where and when Drinking the alcohol)], There are giving treatments [Detoxification, Psychiatric treatments & Medications (Individual therapy, family therapy, feedback session, Alcoholic Anonyms (AA), ASA- Appa Sobriety Association; it’s for already those who have got treatment on there, Coping techniques, Heart therapy, Assertive training, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Cue exposure therapy (CET), interpersonal therapy (IPT), Social skills training (SST),  Family focused therapy (FFT) and Mindfulness based cognitive therapy, Myer-Briggs type indicator (MBTI)], People who are try to stop the alcohol (withdrawal symptom – 1hour) They can experience the Delusion, Hallucination, Seizure, Headache, Nausea and shaking), Day to Day Activities [Monday (Drama), Tuesday (Debate), Wednesday (Laugh therapy), Thursday (Dance), Friday (Ozone Meditation), Saturday (Games) & Sunday (New movies related to Alcohol addiction) and also giving Mindfulness therapy, Yoga and Physiotherapy], on 50 days  they can allow to stay on there the Alcoholic patients, Those who Aggressively for them diagnosing their personality type, and People who have Mania, Schizophrenia disorder, for them give the Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), There are three types of alcoholic patient [ those who get full treatments they can Completely stop to taking alcohol, Treatments after 2 years someone will start to take small glass of alcohol, Treatments after 1 month most of them again start to drink alcohol too much (Relapse)], 5 stages to taking up Alcohol (Trans theoretical model) [Pre-contemplation stage, Contemplation stage, Preparation stage, Action stage, and Maintenance stage]. We had interaction with alcoholic patient, and also we asked few question to clarify our doubts”. Next, Mr. Parthiban R, he is Psychologist at Appa Mental Health Facility in Tiruvannamalai, he said that “Acute care [Outpatient (OP) area have doing the initial work, Collecting Biographical details, life history towards patient and also Diagnosis their issues & Inpatient (IP) have getting Full details from the patient such as Past experiences, Family history; it is two-way process – Observation based on a patient and Full Treatment based on the Diagnosis & Duration, Inpatient Treatment is giving for those who haven’t get control over their medications], Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (MECT) before giving a Anesthesia and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) has 99% of benefits than Other therapies, and also it takes below 1 to 1 ½ month that the patients who has get control over their Symptoms of Hallucination, Delusion, Schizophrenia disorder and Mood disorders. Patients have taking medication based on their duration. And also there are having Community based on rehabilitation, and Insight Orientation Therapy (for those who have Persistent Delusion disorder because they don’t insight so this kind of patients may have get Relapse in future), he was divided as a group for us to Observe the patients at 1 hour”. There is treating People who have Unipolar depression, Alcoholism, Schizophrenia disorder, Bipolar disorder, Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD), and Dementia followed by Epilepsy, Developmental and Behavioral disorders in Children & Adolescents, Suicide/ self-harm. We have thanked our HOD, Dr. Fr. Joe Sanjay I and our Class Teacher Sr. Anthoniammal P gave us great opportunity to observe the mental health disorders and alcohol addicted peoples and got chance to study the case history of a patients. It’s so helpful for us to diagnose and treat the mental illness and what kind of therapies we have to give for the Alcohol addicted peoples when working in the Rehabilitation and De-addiction Centre.
